The Nonsense of Interculturality in Materials Development. What Sort of Interculturality are We Talking About?
For the last decade, interculturality has been one the obliged topics of research and definition around Latin America and the Caribbean. In the Colombian context, the concept of interculturality has been adopted in all the social, economic and educational discourses. This concept is presented as an alternative to solve many problems that have originated from the globalised world. It is true that interculturality has failed to assure the equity and the mutual respect within cultures in an equalitarian way. Interculturality is a utopia and wishful thinking (Quijano, 2000; Sousa, 2008 and Zarate, 2011). This construct is used in our educational system as a rhetorical strategy and the “make up” to hide the real purpose of the hegemonic monocultural and globalising model imposed by the modern societies and ministries of education.
The aforementioned situation demands that language teachers and materials developers take up a political and ideological position with regard to how languages should be taught and learnt. The purpose of this lecture is to show how interculturality should be understood in materials development and how teachers can take advantage of these challenges in this globalised world.
